Highway Healing
The restorative powers of motorcycle riding.
It’s easy for the uninitiated to see motorcyclists as nothing but thrill-seeking adrenaline-junkies scooting around the world on perilous machines. But how about what’s on the other side of the fence? What are the benefits of motorcycling that better one’s life — one’s health and well-being, to be specific?
Experienced motorcycle riders have long understood motorcycle riding yields benefits like reduced stress and anxiety and for many, the ride is therapy. Whether it’s been a long day at work, or you are struggling with personal issues, the world can seem a more bearable place after doing some kilometres in the saddle.
For many military veterans and first responders (The Rolling Barrage –
Coast to Coast ride to combat PTSD, May 2025 issue), seat time on a motorcycle has also proven to help heal the invisible wounds of Post-
Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Motorcycling is ultimately an escape, recharging us in a way that four-wheeled travel cannot. It’s an exciting, adventurous, and a communal experience. Yes, it may have its downfalls — especially on a cold, rain-stricken day — but, on the flipside, it also has its significant benefits that outweigh any of the gripes.

However, this was to be short-lived, as I was diagnosed with two slipped vertebrae and was ordered to cease any exercise to protect my spine while awaiting surgery. This also affected my capacity to ride.
Now that I have started into my seventh decade — with a newly acquired membership in the “Sons of Arthritis — Titanium Chapter” — I was musing about how much I missed the ability to head out into the wilds and explore, with all the health benefits that comes from an active outdoor lifestyle.
While various activities can help us achieve this, engaging in outdoor pursuits has proven to be particularly problematic for those of us that are suffering from age-related challenges or injuries.
Nevertheless, one such activity that I found still held tremendous potential for improving my mental and physical health is — wait for it — motorcycle riding. Yup, you heard that right: riding a motorcycle has provided me with an immersive experience that had a profound effect on my overall health and well-being.
IMPROVED HEALTH FROM RIDING
In a study titled, “The Mental and Physical Effects of Riding a Motorcycle,” funded by Harley-Davidson Inc., in conjunction with the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, at the University of California, Los Angeles, has shown that riding a motorcycle has mental and physical benefits and can actually improve your overall health; something motorcyclists have been saying for years…
