Triumph, being the inventor of the streetfighter genre, hopes this fully revised model regains the lead position on the streetfighter grid.<\/p>\n

Triumph Motorcycles owner John Bloor and son Nick, who heads the company these days, are known for being discreet, let-the-product-speak-for-itself industrialists, who largely disdain the kind of marketing hype that some of their marketplace rivals so eagerly embrace. But still, you\u2019d have thought that, in the midst of 2020\u2019s pandemic-posed problems, they\u2019d have wanted to celebrate the fact that the motorcycle, which back in the mists of time\u2014well, 1994, actually\u2014all but dead-heated with Ducati\u2019s M900 Monster in inventing the stripped-out sportbike streetfighter sector, had smashed through the 100,000 sales barrier. Yes, folks: that\u2019s how many Triumph Speed Triples have been built in the past quarter century-plus of sweeping streets and terrorizing traffic lights, while making such a key contribution to Triumph\u2019s bottom line in doing so.<\/p>\n

But despite a substantial makeover in 2016, the Speed Triple has since been seemingly sidelined by the ongoing power struggle (literally!) between its various rivals, with 200 hp-plus outputs\u2014first from Kawasaki via its supercharged H2, then MV Agusta and now Ducati\u2014seeming to be the bar to clear for being counted as a contender capable of serious streetfighting.<\/p>\n

Upping the Ante<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cWe knew we had to lift our game, but we weren\u2019t prepared to do so at the expense of real-world rideability on the public highway,\u201d says Triumph\u2019s Chief Engineer, Stuart Wood. \u201cSo we focused on providing significantly more power while substantially reducing weight, in order to provide much greater all-round performance than before via a much improved power to weight ratio, from a bike which the widest possible range of riders will continue to feel comfortable [riding].\u201d<\/p>\n

So while still meeting Euro 5 compliance, the 2022 Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS is the most potent and most torquey member of that family to date. Wood\u2019s R&D team has created a completely new clean-screen larger-capacity transverse in-line three-cylinder engine measuring 90 x 60.8 mm for an 1,160 cc displacement, versus the previous 79 x 71.4 mm model\u2019s 1,050 cc unit. This delivers 177.5 hp at 10,750 rpm, a massive 29 hp step up from before on an engine redlined at 11,150 rpm, 650 revs higher than previously. And on top of that, peak torque of 92 ft-lb comes at 9,000 rpm, a significant increase from the outgoing model\u2019s 86 ft-lb at 7,500 rpm.<\/p>\n

Competitive Price Point<\/strong><\/p>\n

So that makes the new Triumph retailing for $19,900, with a two-year unlimited mileage warranty and 16,000 km service intervals, capable of trading power stats as well as prices with KTM\u2019s mental 177 hp 1290 Super Duke R, and the 173 hp Aprilia V4 1100 Tuono. Both of those models retail at almost the same list price as the 2022 Speed Triple.<\/p>\n

Available Triumph colours are Sapphire Black, with red and silver graphics, or Matte Silver Ice, with black, silver and yellow graphics\u2014but I must say I think it\u2019s a strategic error Triumph doesn\u2019t have something much brighter and more in-yer-face as a third option for…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
